Eared Grebe

Eared Grebe - 9/12/2016, Rose Valley Lake © Bill Snyder
Eared Grebe is a rare vagrant that is somewhat difficult to detect due to small size and similarities to Horned Grebe (in nonbreeding plumage). There are five known records of Eared Grebe in Lycoming County.
One record is from April 29, 1988 at Rose Valley Lake, which was accepted as a Class I-P record by PORC.
There are also more recent records from Rose Valley Lake. One of those records was September 11, 2016 that was possibly the same bird seen at nearby Montour Preserve (presumed first Montour County record) the day before. Other Rose Valley Lake records were from May 2018, September 2020, and a bird that stayed for at least a week in November 2022.
