The Little Dipper will allow birders to observe common mergansers and other species swimming underwater.

The Lycoming Audubon Society based in Williamsport, Pennsylvania has used donations from the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania's Raise the Region fundraiser to buy a submarine.

The purchase of this military surplus diesel submarine makes Lycoming Audubon the first chapter in an interior state to own such a craft.

The submarine, named the Little Dipper, will stay docked at Rose Valley Lake, but will also be used during yearly trips to Lake Erie.

Vice president David Brown issued a statement saying "this vessel will allow us to study the behavior of diving ducks, cormorants, and grebes in ways never before possible and will allow local birders to greatly expand their underwater life lists."

The Little Dipper is expected to be in operation by next April 1st.
